Exploradores Glacier
Exploradores Glacier, located in Chile’s Aysén Region, descends from Mount San Valentín and lies within Laguna San Rafael National Park. It is a valley glacier approximately 20 km long and 3 km wide, with an average thickness of around 130 m, surrounded by moraine fields, evergreen forests, and Andean peaks.
After a closure in late 2023 due to dangerous ice collapses and crevasses, the glacier has been reopened since February under strict safety protocols: access only from 7:30 to 16:00, groups of at least four adults, mandatory risk waivers, certified guides with rescue gear, and continuous communication with park rangers.
Visitors can now trek along a secure western route to a glacial viewpoint, and—if permitted—walk on the ice with crampons, exploring ice tunnels and gaining panoramic views of the Northern Ice Field. It’s a demanding yet unforgettable adventure, combining physical challenge with ecological awareness and deep immersion in a fragile environment.
