Laguna Huemul

Laguna Huemul

Laguna Huemul is a small glacial lake located at about 2,000 meters elevation on Cerro Las Cabras, in the Las Trancas Valley, Ñuble Region. Fed solely by snowmelt, it features an intense turquoise color and is surrounded by native lenga, ñirre, and coihue forests.

The hike to the lake takes between 4 and 6 hours round trip, with medium to high difficulty. The trail starts at the Shangri-La sector, passing through native forest and rocky, steep sections. There are more challenging routes as well as longer, less steep alternatives. Along the way, hikers can enjoy views of the Nevados de Chillán volcanic complex and spot wildlife like condors and black woodpeckers.

Camping and swimming in the lake are not allowed. Visitors must register with local authorities before starting the hike. It is advised to hike in groups and carry water, warm clothing, sun protection, and a basic first aid kit.
