Salar de Atacama

Salar de Atacama

The Salar de Atacama is the largest salt flat in Chile and one of the most expansive in South America. It is located in the Antofagasta Region, south of San Pedro de Atacama, within a vast basin surrounded by the Andes and Domeyko mountain ranges. Its surface consists of cracked salt crusts, forming a rugged white landscape dotted with vividly colored lagoons.

Among its highlights are high-altitude lagoons like Laguna Chaxa, a habitat for Andean, Chilean, and James’s flamingos, as well as other desert wildlife. The area is also a key site for lithium extraction, due to its mineral-rich brine.

Part of the Los Flamencos National Reserve, the salt flat holds ecological, scientific, and touristic value. Its stark contrast between the white crust, clear skies, and volcanic backdrop makes it one of the most striking landscapes in northern Chile.
