The Tatio Geysers
The Tatio Geysers make up the highest geothermal field in the Southern Hemisphere and one of the largest in the world. They are located over 4,200 meters above sea level in the Andes Mountains, north of San Pedro de Atacama, in Chile’s Antofagasta Region. The site features dozens of steam columns, hot water jets, and thermal pools that erupt from the ground at sunrise, creating a unique natural spectacle.
This phenomenon occurs when cold underground water meets hot magmatic bodies, producing a continuous activity of fumaroles and jets that can reach several meters in height. The early morning cold amplifies the visual impact of the steam, making sunrise the most breathtaking time to visit.
In addition to its natural and scientific significance, the Tatio Geysers are part of the cultural landscape of Atacameño communities and illustrate the geothermal potential of Chile’s Andean region.
