Bosque Fray Jorge National Park
Bosque Fray Jorge National Park is located in the Coquimbo Region, near the town of Ovalle, and is one of Chile’s most unique ecosystems. Despite being surrounded by the semi-arid landscapes of the Norte Chico, the park contains a humid Valdivian-type forest thanks to the coastal fog known as camanchaca, which brings constant moisture.
This relict forest is a remnant from prehistoric times, composed of olivillo trees, ferns, mosses, and other plant species typical of southern Chile, all sustained here by a rare microclimate. The park is also home to foxes, endemic birds such as the canastero and turca, and a wide variety of insects.
Fray Jorge is a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve and features walking trails, scenic viewpoints, and educational areas. It’s an ideal destination for those seeking nature, biodiversity, and striking contrasts within a semi-arid region.
