La Portada
La Portada is one of the most iconic natural landmarks in northern Chile. Located about 18 kilometers north of Antofagasta, it features a striking 43-meter-high stone arch formed by the action of wind and sea erosion on ancient marine sediment layers and fossil deposits. The arch rises above the Pacific Ocean, surrounded by dramatic cliffs and coastal formations.
It serves as a symbol of the city and a unique meeting point between desert and sea. The site is ideal for observing seabirds such as pelicans, boobies, and terns, and for enjoying sweeping ocean views, especially at sunset. Its geological significance and scenic beauty make it a must-see destination in the region.
