Pica & Matilla Oasis – Desert Hot Springs & Tropical Fruits

The Oasis of Pica and Matilla is located in the Pampa del Tamarugal, in Chile’s Tarapacá Region, within the Atacama Desert. It is known for its natural hot springs and the cultivation of tropical fruits, especially the famous Pica lime, as well as mangoes, guavas, and oranges.

Underground water flows through old colonial aqueducts to natural pools called “cochas,” with the most popular being the “Resbaladero.” There are also public thermal baths with waters reaching up to 40 °C, ideal for relaxation and wellness.

This irrigation system has allowed agriculture to thrive in the desert, though today it faces pressure from overuse and environmental challenges.

The village of Matilla, a short distance from Pica, preserves its winemaking heritage through historic structures like the Lagar de Matilla, an old colonial wine press. Together, these towns offer peaceful surroundings, traditional architecture, and cultural heritage linked to ancient trade routes and Spanish colonization.
